Walking along Panepistimiou Street in Athens.

There are some beautiful and important buildings one can admire, along Panepistimiou(University) Street. The first one, as you leave Syntagma Square, on your right, is the building that houses the Numismatic Museum of Greece. The building itself, was built in 1878-1879, by the German architect Ernst Ziller, to be used as the residence of the Schliemann family. Its name is "Ιλίου Μέλαθρον", "The palace of Troy". (Remember that Heinrich Schliemann discovered the ruins of ancient Troy).
The Catholic Cathedral of St. Dionysius. (St. Denis). St Dionysius was a judge of the supreme court in ancient Athens, when St. Paul the Apostle visited Athens for first time. He became a Christian and was baptized, and later became the first Bishop of Athens.
The Academy of Athens. Built during the second half of the 19th century according to plans by the Danish architect Theophil Hansen, who was inspired by ancient Greece. As you can see at the following photographs, the building resembles an ancient Greek Temple.

Apollo stands on the right hand column and Athena on the left, in front of the entrance of the Academy.
Plato on the left ans Socrates on the right are the two statues at the sides of the stairs.
The National Library of Greece. Was completed at the beginning of the 20th century, according to the designs of Theophil Hansen and the supervision of Ernst Ziller.

PS1. These buildings are really architectural treasures as you can see from the outside. But they hide more treasures inside. I suggest you follow the links I have placed here, to visit the insides, for more information and photographs.
PS2. I will be away from home for a few days and again I am going to miss you. I have arranged for a few posts to appear automatically while I will be away, to keep in touch till I come back again with more photographs. I wish you all a great weekend. Costas.

ΥΓ 1.

Such beautiful architecture. But the thing that strikes me most is the small cars! In the US our cars are much too big.
